- George C. (1880û1959), US general and statesman; full name George Catlett Marshall. A career army officer, he served as chief of staff 1939û45 during World War II. As secretary of state 1947û49, he initiated the program of economic aid to European countries known as the Marshall Plan. Nobel Peace Prize (1953)
